We tend to think of air pollution as something that only happens outdoors, but the air indoors can actually be more polluted than the air outside! The air inside your home may be polluted by lead, radon, or chemicals used in many cleaners. These allergens have become much more important in recent years because we’re spending more time indoors, and because modern homes are airtight. While it’s almost impossible to eliminate all the allergens in your home, you can reduce them.

Vacuuming the carpets and area rugs at least once or twice a week with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter can greatly reduce allergens. If you have a heating or cooling system, change the filters regularly. Those filters can trap airborne allergens instead of recirculating them. It may help to use an air purifier in the most commonly used areas of the house. Also, consider a dehumidifier to prevent the growth of mold in damp areas. Lastly, but not least, open windows from time to time to allow fresh air to move through the house.
