If you find that you have bugs in your home, you usually try your best to remedy the problem, but what if you can’t figure out where they come from? Sewer gnats can be difficult to figure out when you first encounter them, and they are notoriously difficult to get rid of. Many times they are mistaken for fruit flies, but when examined closely, there are some differences that tell them apart. The wings of sewer gnats aren’t clear like fruit flies, and they are usually found around drains, while fruit flies are attracted to fruit (naturally) and other sweet smelling things.
Sewer gnats nest inside your pipes, and their nests are very difficult to remove, even with scalding hot water. The best way to get rid of them is to use a tool that will clean your pipes mechanically. You should make sure that the nests get removed completely, since they can quickly reestablish their nest if just a few survive.
