Floods constitute some of the most frequent and disruptive weather hazards in the country. Floods are also the number one weather-related cause of loss of life, so we should them seriously and prepare. Flash floods are especially dangerous because they can occur within minutes. This is why having an evacuation plan specifically for floods is highly recommended. Prepare at least one or two alternative escape routes, in case the main evacuation route is impassable. Also, make sure you have a way of contacting family. And finally, have an emergency evacuation kit prepared, and know in advance how to use the items in the kit. The following are the most important items to have in your kit:
- A crank-powered Portable Weather Radio
- Water (one gallon per day, per person)
- Food (non-perishable)
- A reliable flashlight
- Extra batteries
- A First Aid Kit
- A Multi-Tool
- A local area map
- A compass
- A change of clothes
- Copies of important personal documents
- Binoculars
- A waterproof bag to keep everything in
