Everyone has different storage needs and different amounts of stuff, so we can’t give specific suggestions about how much storage space each person needs. But you should have more storage than you think you need for your current and future needs. That will not only make living in your house more pleasant, but it will also make your house more appealing when it’s time for you to sell it.

One rule of thumb is that the total storage space in your home should equal about 10% of the total square footage. So, if you build a 4000 square foot house, you should set aside 400 square feet of storage.

No matter how much storage space you decide on, just keep in mind that most of us tend to fill up any storage space we have available in our homes. So including slightly less storage in your house may encourage you to clean out more and have less stuff, but it can also negatively affect your resale value, so be careful.
