Whenever a home inspector sees vines growing on a structure, he knows that means trouble.
Vines can be very damaging to a building for many reasons. Here are just a few:
- Bugs. Vines are basically a built-in staircase for all sorts of critters, but especially wood-destroying insects. In particular, carpenter ants really enjoy using these vines to get to areas of your home or garage that they normally would have had to work a lot harder to get to on their own.
- Structural Damage. Especially is this true on a masonry building. The vines get into the fine cracks and gaps wherever they can and slowly pull the building apart.
- Moisture. Moisture is a building’s worst enemy, and vines are moisture’s best friend. All that vegetation right up against the building allows moisture to touch the building for longer periods of time and allow more moisture into the home.
